Pdingpdoong was made during our claymation workship in NID last year. It took us 3- 4 months time for the making of this film. And was made by group of four which included me, manasi parikh, nupur mukherjee and chewang lepcha.

it won at Chitrakatha 09 for the best film in the national category

it got the jury mention at Asifa 09

and it took us to Monstra 09 in Lisbon this year.

Chitrakatha, a 3 year old festival happens every 2 years in NID. The last one happened last October. The mascot is a cow and COW stands for Cinema Of Wonders.

This is a small promo I had made for the festival. Couldn't invest must time after it, but I did enjoy animating the naked baby.

there was a time when people believed that the earth was flat. however they were proved wrong. the earth is a sphere and it consists of 3 layers. the inner most layer is apparently very hard. ha ha ha. people believe any crap if it is "scientifically" proved. i say the earth is hollow inside and there is a giant blue rat inside running, causing the earth to rotate. laughing at me? ha ha. even they did that when they were told, the earth isnt flat .

They are fascinating........ these fish. recently nimisha has been brainwashing people into buying fish, after she bought her knifefish. well she tried it on me. and it worked. so we went to the fish shop together. and i dont regret it. i couldnt stop watching them. i had seen most them only in the pictures. the clown fish, albanian catfish, octopus, the dumb looiking smiley fish which sat lazily on rocks, the beautiful black fish with 2 white spots which looked like evil eyes, when it went behind the rocks, 30,000RS worth fish with silver lining on it which looked like chinese inscribed on it, and on and on............i came back and sketched them before i did anything else. didnt stick to the true colours though. but thats okay.

recently while running towards the institute for a class, i saw this guy sitting by our basketball court, painting stuff. it struck me immediately that its been ages since i touched paints. i ran into the students store, bought the last box of water colours, and i painted. i painted and painted and painted till i got fed up of it.

the other morning when we woke up in the studio, none of us were in the mood, rather condition i would say, to animate for the claymation we are working on. so chewang began playing this Tibetan hymn. while we listened to it he began telling us stories of his place like about how people were superstitious back at his place and how his friend was recognised as a Rimboche and about the incredible shaolin monks etc.. etc... it was all rather interesting to hear and i couldnt stop myself from drawing this!

recently, like a week back, two of my friends were having a big conversation about something called illustration friday. i asked them what illustration friday was. they stared at me. duh! u donno what illustration friday is? so i checked it out. and i got interested in the idea of illustrating on a given topic. just like the sessions we had in our hostel which i was missing.
this weeks topic was BALLOON. so ya..this is what i did.
(the dad and kid pass by a stall. the kid wanted a balloon but the hogger dad wanted to spend his money on something else. at the same time he didnt want to disappoint his son. and this is what he did.)

Flying squirrelled tiger

we were made to do our character design course with arnab choudhary and pavan, the director and character designer respectively of the upcoming animated film called ARJUN. we had to design some creatures (by combining 2 or more animals) for a 5-6 min sequence. we were made to sketch our animals like mad throughout the course.
this, my character, as you can see in the first image, clings onto the walls waiting for the prey. it is found in the himalayan areas. so it camouflages with the surrounding. as the prey comes close, it jumps. it uses its extended skin like that of a flying squirrels to glide. and it attacks.
i wasnt very happy with the character. but they didnt like any changes on it. they wanted it the way it was.
my parents were very excited about this ,when i told them that we were working for a film. i kept talking to them about how my character was and all that. i went home, and i was showing them the character, they had a big smile on their face............ till they saw it. i was waiting for their reaction.......................my father breaks the silence asking ' thats it?' i get really annoyed when people do that.

robot smells a flower

a few of my batchmates and seniors in my hostel started off these sessions where we all decide on a random topic and come up with an illustration for it on any software we want in 15 mins, 30 mins. i joined them one day and it was fun.

this one was A ROBOT WITH ANTENA, ON ONE WHEEL, TRYING TO SMELL A FLOWER. time was 15 mins.

i dont think they do this anymore. looking forward to doing more of this stuff.

This time when i went home, i went through my portfolio stuff i had prepared, for getting into nid. amazingly, i was amazingly organised while preparing for nid. all my stuff is neatly preserved in a thick ugly looking album. it feels nice to go through your old works or old photos. you just cant stop smiling when you see them.

i like elephents. have you ever rode on an elephant? man.... u should. i couldnt walk normally for the next 20 mins when i did. the best part is when u feed them. u ll have to put your entire hand into its mouth when you feed it. to make it worse, they have thick poky hair on their toungue.

Alright....recently iv been feeling really bad for not knowing anything about softwares. people made me feel bad about it. people who knew them. so then one day i installed the adobe cs3 master collection on my laptop and decided to learn them one by one. i started off with photoshop. this is my first artwork on photoshop.

The character turned out to look like my physics tuition teacher. her name was saraswati. saraswati teacher. she always told me i ll never have a good future coz i just draw all the time and not learn anything............... I hated her.

Last year I developed this liking for the idea of owning a blog. its pretty cool. My batchmates used to keep telling me to start one. i said "ya ya. i ll do it". they asked me "when".I said "soon". the soon went on and on and one day suddenly................there it is.
Right in front of me. A birthday gift. "ooohhh check out my blog" i ll say now! ha ha. I was really impressed with the effort Manasi actually took to go through my sketchbooks, scan them, put them up and....... Woah! Well from now on I ll be the one handling the blog and... ya thats it. :). ThaNkYoU Mana.

VC Promo

This was the first animation short i'v made. manasi came to me one day and said "hey lets make a VC promo". we had just gotten into animation then and were pretty kicked about it. so I said' mmm....... okay." n then we made it. we had to promote our colour white. the opposing teams were yellow and orange. we were quiet scared then to animate because of which we kept minimalising the characters every time we sit to animate. finally we ended up giving stick limbs to the characters. ya they look really funny. but it was a nice expeience then, got to learn softwares, worked with sound, learned to use the lunch box, and above all got to know a lot of people(which is pretty evident from the thanks list).
